I am traveling to Beijing this coming month. I am on a bit of a budget and figured I could save some money by using public transportation. Is the subway system easy to use? Are the stops listed in English? Is it safe to use at night?

The subway is easy to use. Get a basic map and you can use it to get anywhere in the city. Because of the Olympics, they just extended the subway network and all stops are labeled and announced in English as well as Chinese. It is safe to use during the day but gets packed around rush hour times. It should save you some money since it is only 2RMB per ride.

The subway in Beijing is very easy to use. As more Beijing subway lines coming into use, traveling by subway becomes the best option for most locals and tourists. For languages and safty, there won't be any question.

I agree with everyone else. The subway is really easy. Coming from London and having lived in Spain, I find it quite natural to follow the tube maps - the only difference is that it is really clean and very cheap and the trains are much nicer. I would not recommend the bus until you know which number to actually use and where the bus stops are.
