The Jiumenkou section of the Great Wall is located in Suizhong county, Liaoning province, about 15 kilometers from Shanhaiguan.
This section was first built in Northern Qi Dynasty (479-502) and extended at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The total length of Jiumenkou Great Wall is 1704 meters with more than 100-meter wall crossing the river. It is the only Great Wall section built up on a river.A 110-meter-long bridge with nine five-meter-high sluice gates straddles the Jiujiang River. It was once used to regulate the flow of the river and hold off invading enemies. The name “Jiumenkou” means literally “Entrance to the Nine Gates.” There are rectangular stone abutments, covering an area of 7,000 square meters. Walled fortresses once stood at each end of the bridge. Constructed in 1626, the two fortresses are about one kilometer in circumference. The eight-meter surrounding wall consists of two layers: the inside made of brick and the outside of stone.
