Introduction

Purple Bamboo Park, one of the seven largest parks in Beijing is located at the southern end of Baishiqiao Road. Its eastern gate is directly across the street from the Capital Gymnasium. As the name suggests, the garden has a large variety of bamboos, with as many as 50 species in total. There are more than 160,000 plants with the most prominent being the black bamboo. The park covers an area of 140,000 square meters (34.5 acres) including three connecting lakes and two islands. Five arched bridges connect the lakes, isles and main garden area and there are scattered corridors and pavilions throughout. On the islands and the banks of the lakes, flowering shrubs, trees and flowers have been planted. To the north of the lakes the famous Changhe River flows slowly by. Renowned for its bamboos, the Purple Bamboo Park is a large-scale garden reminiscent of those of the southern Yangtze Delta.
