Introduction

Despite its name, the Silk Market offers much more than just silk. The Chinese silk products in this market are relatively inexpensive and therefore are very popular. In addition, there are also cashmere garments, down jackets, leather goods, shoes, hats, watches, handicrafts and trinkets sold here. If you are tall or wear larger sizes, the Silk Market is the best place to buy clothes and shoes. There is a newly opened pearl store on the fifth floor that sells quzlity pearls at reasonal prices.

One of the main lures of the market is the fact that none of the prices are set, all prices are reached through bargaining. If you are a proficient bargainer, then you can get great deals on all kinds of clothing, but if you are soft-hearted and don't like confrontation, then you may end up paying more than most. It is often helpful to bring along a Chinese friend who can help you bargain, often the starting price will be lower for a local than it is for a foreign face.

There is quite a bit of things to see and. Buy. Almost mainly clotheing and such however quality varies. Be sure to look carefully at stitches and seams. There are actually some well made products in there. NOW PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE GOING.I am chinese with many family members who are bargain masters. I followed their rule and made many steals.1. Never stop and stare. Just look around as you walk and when you do see something you like keep walking to the end of the hall. Judge the price of the object. And put only around 40% of the value into your wallet and keep the rest else where. So if you think it will be quoted to be 600 yuan, leave only 225 yuan in your wallet ( smaller bills make it convincing )2. They say something, you counter with approx 30%. They will flat out reject it and counter with 80%. Stick to your guns until she offers 50%.3. When she hits 50 deploy the walkway method!! Tell her too much and casually walk away.5.she will pull you back ask what's your best offer. Open your wallet and show her the money you have.4. Tell her that you need to reserve a bit for taxi back to hotel and that is all you can offer.5. Wall away with your purchase at 35% the starting price. This will work about 90% of the time. I snuck out there saving around 3000 yuan. Dress clothes, backpack, luggage case, full suit and more for under 600 yuan. Trust this method .

It is a shopping paradise especially for foreign customers. Anyway, the price of the goods here is more expensive when compared to two years ago. The surrounding is not bad but the problem is you must know how to bargain if you wish to buy from here. When you asked the rate for the first time, the first given rate will be extremely high. You might need to bargain until the rate is about 70% off its original rate, then only you decide whether you want to buy or not. You might need to spend a lot of time bargaining if you shop here.

There are many small stalls inside including bags, luggage, shoes, attires, souvenirs, jewelries, watches and etc. The owners are basically can communicate in at least three languages. You may find customers from all over the world here. If you walk along the stalls, you might be able to hear bargaining voices with differentlanguages, if you can understand all, then you must be a language genius. I don’t know why, but seems that this is a favorite destination for foreign customers especially. The quality of products is just fair and most of the products are pirated. However, the price is very expensive. You need to bargain and bargain before you can get it at reasonable price. Moreover, the products sold at different stalls are basically the same. So, if you find one that you wish to buy, you had better compare the rate at different stalls before you made decision. If you have enough time to spend here on bargaining, you will definitely find some items that you have been looking for long time.

I don’t like this place a t all. No matter when you come here, you will find the same styles of attires selling here, the very outdated fashion style! I wonder why there are still many foreigners who willing to shop here. Anyway, Silk Market is still a great destination if you wish to buy all types of pirated bags. Basically, the rate is around 120 RMB each for handbag. You may be able to find some limited edition bags here. Most of the customers are foreign travelers. There are many tourism coaches that park outside Silk Market. From the number of coaches, you can imagine how many customers were here daily. Perhaps this is the main reason why the selling items are expensive here. The sales girls and salesman are normally able to communicate in a few languages. Some of them even stick to the foreigners in order to persuade them to buy from their stalls. I felt really ashamed for them.

Most of the sales girls speak English and perhaps some of them can communicate in many different languages such as Spanish, French, Dutch and Japanese. Foreigner customers are very welcomed and will be served with all their passion but their face will be absolutely different if you are local Chinese. They are willing to sell products to foreigners who offer very low rate but they are unwilling to sell the same items to Chinese who offer better rates. I have no answer regarding why this would happen. Anyway, I enjoyed shopping and bargaining here especially for jewelries. I can always get some good offers.
Sonia
I always come here with the foreign customers of my company. All the sales girls are able to communicate well in English, so you need to worry about the bargaining process. If you come here, you must spend time bargaining with them or otherwise the rate will be too high. The price per item is basically 70% off from its given rate. Anyway, there are not many choices for attires but if you wish to buy some jewelries or souvenirs, then it could be a great place for you. Well, basically, Silk Market is a paradise for foreign travelers especially for those who wish to buy some cheap and fake items. Of course, you need to go through some serious bargaining before you can get it. Good luck!

Yes a great place... I think I'm addicted. The staff are aggressive and great fun, so far I've been told, "I remember you", "your crazy", "get out of my shop", "I'll kill you and I'll kill your wife", "your stupid", "you must be joking", "just little more" and "an ice cream for me", just to mention a few. The best of all is, as you walk away... "OK OK" followed by "you're too tough" as they stuff the goodies in a plastic bag. If you can't stand the pushiness and grabbing, perhaps not the place for you, however the prices are great and the staff are just trying to make a buck. Check your goods carefully, quality can be a problem, (unsown pockets, bad zippers, buttons falling off etc). There is a great alteration shop in the basement, near the supermarket (north? end) nice people, very fair price, fast and good work. There is also a cheap leather jacket shop, ground floor (south? end) where prices average RMB 200, however no bargaining. Love it!

recently i found a way to make them 'tamer'. i have asian look and i learned chinese before so they think im chinese. if we make a negotiation in chinese, we usually end up yelling to each other. but recently, instead of talking chinese, i talk with them in english and they totally have different way to approach me! the negotiation becomes more fun, sometimes with jokes, and at the end i walk out from the store with the stuff that i want and i paid the price that i want too. :D Nevertheless, this place is still the one i visited if i wanna buy polo shirts, suitcase or fake bags. lol...

Good place for a cheap shopping thrill...make sure u bargaing at least 75%off the price that the staff offer cos all the items there are "fake" non of them are originals. Get a local chinese friend to bring u there. Oh the hicups are that most of the shoes are not woth buying due to their poor quality but the t-shirts are woth a try out for the cheap price. Dun forget to go the top level for some local souvenir if u are intending to get your frens some cute stuff from china.
